I’ve had a thing for cheese balls of almost any flavor since I was a child, though the obsession actually started with something that wasn’t technically a cheese ball at all. Every Christmas, my family received a large crock of sharp, spreadable cheese as a gift from entertainer Danny Thomas and his wife Rose Marie, friends of my father through their work with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. I still remember the excitement of seeing the mailman arrive with that big brown crock filled with golden goodness. It was so generous in size that my mom would often scoop some out and shape her own smaller cheese balls, rolling them in spiced nuts or fresh herbs to set out on our holiday entertaining table.
Those early holiday cheese balls set the hook for my lifelong affection for creamy, savory spreads rolled in something crunchy. Over the years I’ve made all kinds of variations, from herb-packed classics to spicy party versions, but I’ve always been especially fond of the sweet-and-savory combinations that pair beautifully with cheese boards. These little fig and date cheese bites are one of my favorites, blending tangy feta, creamy cheeses, bright lemon zest, and just enough fruit to give each bite a hint of jammy sweetness.
The combination might sound unusual at first, but the flavors come together beautifully: rich cheeses, bright lemon, a little garlic, and just enough figs and dates to add natural sweetness.
What makes these little cheese bites so addictive is the contrast in both flavor and texture. The base is creamy and tangy from the cream cheese and feta, while grated gouda and parmesan add a subtle firmness and savory depth. Lemon zest and fresh herbs brighten the mixture, and the dates and fig preserves lend a gentle sweetness that plays beautifully against the salty cheeses. Rolled in chopped walnuts and pine nuts, each bite offers a crunchy exterior that gives way to a smooth, flavorful center.
They’re especially nice as part of a cheese board, where their sweet-and-savory balance pairs beautifully with crisp crackers, sliced baguette, and fresh fruit like apples or pears. Set them alongside olives, nuts, and a little honey, and they quickly become one of the first things to disappear.
If you’re looking for an appetizer that comes together quickly for a holiday spread or just something a little different for your next cheese board, these sweet and savory cheese bites are easy to make and always a hit. Ready to give them a try? Here’s how to make them.
